Trina Greene, advocate on behalf of “Peace Over Violence,” called in to “On Air with Ryan Seacrest” to discuss the Los Angeles Unified School District recent passage of a new proposal which will teach high school students how to recognize violence in their own or friends relationships.

Trina continues, “We’ve been working with LAUSD [Los Angeles United School District] for the past few years on getting a teen dating violence policy. REally promote healthy relationship education on campus. We know that this issue is really happening to our young people. The statistics are startling. 1 in 3 girls are experiencing teen dating violence by the time she graduates High School, and if we aren’t educating our young people about it then we can’t prevent it.”

The program educates individuals by giving scenarios to the students and open up the floor for discussion to see their reactions, “Well after those questions we allow them to process if they would stay in the relationship or would they leave? The goal is to get them to think about why they would stay, and then after that we ask them to react if that were a friend going through that relationship how would they help that friend?
Trina warns, “Physical abuse isn’t the only kind of abuse! There is verbal abuse, mental abuse, emotional abuse, and theres sexual abuse. But people don’t typically realize it until its physical!”
