Adam-Lambert-Better-600-400

After a behind the scenes clip and a short preview were released earlier this week, Adam Lambert‘s video for “Better Than I Know Myself” dropped this morning. There’s a lot more to it than either of the previous videos let on!

In the music video, there are two versions of Lambert. On one side of the glass is calm, yoga-posing, book-reading Adam and his baby blue eyes. On the other side is unbalanced, pomegranate-ripping, leather-wearing Adam, whose heavily made-up eyes flash dangerously as he sets the whole place on fire. Despite the “good” side of the singer trying to make peace with his alter-ego, the whole place looks like it’s going up in flames, but at the end the “American Idol” alum walks down the street, his eyes each a different color.

Lambert was right when he said that the video might make listeners second-guess original impressions of the song’s meaning. When he sings “you’re the only one that knows me / better than I know myself,” and that “I would die without you,” it sounds like he is talking to a lover. However, the amazing video directed by Ray Kay shows us that Lambert’s first single off his upcoming album is also about the battle within himself to balance both sides of his personality.

It’s rare that a song can have such great double-meanings, perhaps without the artist even intending for that to happen. However, this situation is reminiscent of Kelly Clarkson‘s song “Because Of You,” which could have been about a romantic relationship, but was actually about the divorce between Clarkson’s parents.

What do you think? Is “Better Than I Know Myself” an even greater song now that you have a second take on it? Lambert’s sophomore album, Trespassing, drops later this spring.
