The “Act of Valor” premiere wasn’t on a typical red carpet. Six U.S. Navy SEALs dropped in via parachute to make their mark on the festivities. After all, the film is ultimately about the real-life experiences of a soldier.

The fictional film is inspired by SEALs’ weapons, tactics and missions to fight terrorism. Co-director and producer Scott Waugh didn’t want any A-list actors on this project. In fact, the movie’s rawness and emotion comes from using real Navy SEALs and their families.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter Waugh says: “Nobody from Hollywood wanted us to make it. That’s why we ended up funding it ourselves and finding private equity and why we really made a truly independent film with this.”

The indie flick cost just under 20 million dollars but for Waugh and his team, it wasn’t about the money. It was about the chance to tell the story and get the word out about real heroes.

“They said, ‘Would you guys make a film about our community?’ And I said, to be honest I don’t know much about your community. We would need to spend a lot of time down there. We did. We spent a year getting to know them,” says Waugh.

The film goes beyond all the tech savvy filming equipment and editing programs in order to create a realistic experience for the viewer. The gunfire is all real and the film was shot on a nuclear submarine rather than a set.

The trailer features Eminem‘s rap anthem “I’m Not Afraid” and the tag line, “We all have something worth fighting for.” The words: “Family. Honor. Freedom.” will instantly draw you in.
