Actor Max Greenfield called in to “On Air with Ryan Seacrest” on Tuesday to chat about being on the hit show “New Girl” and whether or not he is like his character on the show in real life.

Is Max Anything Like Schmidt?
“When the show first started, people would ask me and I’d say: ‘No, no, no, I’m not like Schmidt. Please, I think that’s a ridiculous question.’ Then the character started to really started to catch on and became kind of popular and I was like: ‘I’m kind of like him.’ Then it became really popular, way more popular than I’ll ever be, and now I just tell people I’m playing myself.”

On His Character, Schmidt:
“I think we’ve found a nice little space, where we made him vulnerable from the very beginning…Because of that we’ve been able to get away with more than most characters on TV,” Max tells us.

On Being On A Hit Show:
“It’s incredible. The difference between being on a show and a hit show is just night and day. You realize it’s so out of your control and so much bigger than you that you just kind of go along for the ride and you just try to stay as grateful as you possibly can.”

The season finale of “New Girl” airs tonight at 9/8c on FOX.
