Ice-T Directs Award Winning Rap Documentary ‘The Art of Rap’ [VIDEO]
A new documentary, directed by the award winning rapper and actor, Ice-T, delves into the culture and the true art-form known as hip-hop and rap. “Something from Nothing: The Art of Rap,” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and received a “2012 Official Selection” award.
The documentary goes into the history and development of rap and how it rose into the mainstream music scene. After two years of production, Ice-T has finally finished the doc and is very happy with people’s response. Kanye West, Eminem, Dr. Dre, and Snoop Dogg are just some of the few A-list rappers that are in the doc. In an interview with Billboard magazine, he explains why he felt like the story of rap needed to be told and for people to hear the experiences of rappers from different backgrounds.
On Telling The Story of Rap:
“In my 25 years of rapping, no one ever asked me how I did it. People would always be more concerned with the beefs, the cars, the girls, the celebrity side of it, but not how it’s done. To me that meant people thought you just s*** it out. There’s no creative process. There’s nothing to it… I tried to get people who spoke on all the different styles of rap — the underground battle rappers or the conscious rappers. There’s lots of different styles.”
The film comes out June 15. Checkout the trailer below!
