The actress reveals season four, which kicks off next Tuesday on ABC Family, makes her happy because they get to go to darker places than ever before as their viewers age.

“Fans who were 13 when the show started are now 17…and as they grow up… we can go to these darker places. That makes me happy…The darker the better, to be honest.”

Ashley who plays Hanna on the hit series also shared she’s particularly excited about this season because: “We have a lot of new characters, crazy storylines for them and more people keep joining The “A” Team.”

Adding, “like, people that you’d never expect. Characters the girls thought were on their side and were so close to are turning their backs on them because it turns out their agenda this whole time has been to ruin their lives!

“My album is something I’m really, really, really proud of,” the 23-year-old tells the June/July issue of Seventeen, which hits newsstands on May 21. “I’ve intentionally been quiet about it because I want the music to speak for itself. People are either going to love it or hate it. But I think that once they hear it, they’ll be like, ‘Okay, she loves this and is serious about it.’ This is my pride and joy — it’s my baby! I worked my butt off on it.”

Lucy, who compares her sound to Miranda Lambert, wrote some of the material for her debut album for Hollywood Records with Sugarland‘s Kristian Bush.

“We’ve got the sassy stuff down,” the actress told Us Weekly last fall. “We’ve got some breakup stuff, but we’ve got some beautiful love songs, too … It’s definitely fun for me because I know who I’m singing about, and that’s where the Taylor Swift in me comes out, because I know who I’m singing about, and they’ll know who I’m singing about. But it’s got a little bit of everything.”

First things first, what was up with that Season 4 poster which had all four PLL stars donning red coats? Troian says even she is in the dark!

“It’s actually really funny. When the photo came out, I put it in my head and was like I need to call Marlene King, who is the creator of the show, and talk to her because I have the same question: ‘What is going to happen?’ I know with the season finale the girls all think they saw Alison … in the red coat, so it brings up the question, ‘Is Alison red coat? Is Alison dead?’ So I think all of us are wrapped up in this red coat because they don’t tell me anything.”

Troian continued: “The slogan is ‘Liars Unite,’ so I think the idea is we are all coming together to take down this new adversary.”

Although Troian stayed hush about the poster, she did reveal insight as to what was in the trunk during the last (and very memorable) scene of the finale.

“I can say, which is kind of funny, because when we shot the scene there was nothing in the trunk. When I say we know nothing, we were looking at nothing in the trunk, and I said to Marlene … ‘I just have to know. I’m an actor. Tell me what’s in the trunk so I can imagine it.’ And she said, ‘It’s pretty close to your worst nightmare.’ But when we shot the scene picking up with the season premiere where you see what’s in the trunk, she wasn’t far. It’s pretty awful.”

As for the other show Troian is a part of, the actress talked about the YouTube drama Lauren, which revolves around sexual assault in the military. “It’s an entirely YouTube channel called Wigs … I had no idea about this issue until I started working on Lauren … but apparently with men and women sexual assault in the military is happening to one out of three soldiers … this is the most frightening statistic — you’re more likely to get sexually assaulted by your fellow soldier than you are shot while serving.”

On a lighter note, Troian also recapped how boyfriend and Suits actor Patrick J. Adams took it upon himself to audition for a PLL role solely to win her back.

“Uh, yeah that happened,” she joked. “It was less than romantic at the time but it turned out to be very romantic … We got together because we were doing a play at the Geffen and it was kind of working out, but it wasn’t … it was one of those things where I was like, ‘Maybe this isn’t happening we should just call it quits.’ And we were just starting Pretty Little Liars so I broke up with him and then he called me the next day and said, ‘Just so you know I just randomly got an audition for your show’ … he went in and I was like, ‘Look I’ll never stop you, pursue work.’[But] I was like I didn’t think my show would be his thing! But he went in there and did the audition and then called, because he knew the casting director, his whole team of agents and managers and said, ‘If you can’t get me this job then we need to seriously talk about you working for me.’ And they were like, ‘You’re threatening all of us for a job on Pretty Little Liars?!’ And then he got it and called me and said, ‘Guess what? I’m going to be on your set, we should probably have lunch or dinner.’”

Did Patrick’s grand gesture work? “He said, ‘Look there’s a table read and I don’t want the first time I see you to be at the table read to be the first time since we’ve broken up,’” she explained. “And we talked and of course it was one of those where we were like, ‘Maybe we should …’ and then he didn’t show up to the table read!”

Patrick’s attempt clearly worked. “We’ve been together for like three years,” gushed Troian.

Patrick’s in a relationship with Pretty Little Liars beauty Troian Bellisario and he actually guest starred on an episode, and tells us it ended up being a very important role for him.

“We broke up at one point and in order to win her back I managed to get an audition for the show. I did a very, very small part on it and ended up winning her back.
