While some said it like “Gift” without the T on the end, others went with “JIF,” like the peanut butter brand.

Well, at the Webby Awards on Tuesday night, the creator of the GIF (which stands for Graphics Interchange Format), Steve Wilhite, set the record straight.

During his acceptance speech for winning the lifetime achievement award, “It’s pronounced JIF, not GIF,” flashed onscreen behind Wilhite. (There was a five-word limit to speech length.)

When the correct pronunciation was revealed, the audience could be heard cheering and laughing.

Wilhite debuted the GIF in June 1987 while working at CompuServe. In 2012, it became the “Word of the Year” by the Oxford American Dictionary.

“Suits That Fly” isn’t the first parody that Wesley and his team have created. They’ve also gotten big laughs with “Lo Pan Style,” a riff of PSY‘s “Gangnam Style,” and “Batman Maybe,” a mashup of Carly Rae Jepsen‘s mega-hit and The Dark Knight Rises.

What’s next for Wesley? More parodies, that’s for sure. “I have a ton of ideas, not just music mashups, that I want to film, but in their right time,” he tells RyanSeacrest.com. “It would be a blast to do this with a team full time, but for now we’ll keep going with the ones that we think have the best chance of being seen.”
